Itinerary

DAY 1 LISBON

We’ll meet with the group this morning before delving into a full day tour of Lisbon. On an included visit to the Tile Painting Museum, we’ll watch and learn as local artisans showcase Portugal’s authentic colours – before getting the opportunity to paint our own tiles. This afternoon we’ll drive to the picturesque Sintra, where we’ll visit the famous Pena Palace. This evening, we’ll settle down to a

welcome dinner in a local restaurant – accompanied by the soulful laments of Fado singers. (D)

DAY 2 LISBON – ÓBIDOS – NAZARÉ – ALVADOS

This morning we’ll make tracks to Óbidos, where you’ll have the chance to explore the picturesque streets at your leisure. Then, it’s on to the charming fishing town of Nazaré, which is home to steep cliffs, a sandy beach and an intriguing centre. This evening we’ll check into our accommodation in Alvados – and enjoy a Portuguese cookery lesson and sumptuous dinner together. (B,D)

DAY 3 ALVADOS – TOMAR – ALVADOS

After breakfast, we’ll continue our journey to Tomar, a historic city famous for being the last headquarters of the Knights Templar. Here, we’ll visit the World Heritage-listed Convent of Christ and the 15th-century Synagogue. After sampling some of the local pastries, we’ll return to Alvados, where the evening will be yours. (B)

DAY 4 ALVADOS – COIMBRA – VISEU

Today we’ll travel back in time to Coimbra, where we’ll take a look around the famous Joanina Library – one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. After spending some free time in the city centre, our road will take us to Viseu, where you’ll be free to spend the evening as you please. (B)

DAY 5 VISEU – LAMEGO – QUINTA NOVA

Our fifth day will begin with a visit to a traditional cheesemaker outside of Viseu, where we’ll have the opportunity to learn about the region’s delicious buttery cheese (and, of course, taste a sample or two). Then, we’ll move on to historic Lamego, which is home to the 18th-century Shrine of Our Lady of Remedies, a major pilgrimage site. After some free time here, it’s off to our hotel in Quinta Nova, where dinner will be a group affair. (B,D)

DAY 6 QUINTA NOVA – PINHÃO – PESO DA RÉGUA – QUINTA NOVA

This morning we’ll board a train and make the scenic journey to Pinhão, with plenty of magnificent views of the Douro River along the way. When we get there, we’ll be able to see the scenery from a different perspective on a leisurely boat trip to Peso da Régua in an electric rabelo boat. (B)

DAY 7 QUINTA NOVA – AMARANTE – QUINTA DA AVELEDA – GUIMARÃES

After heading to Amarante this morning (where we’ll see the 16th-century São Gonçalo Church), we’ll pay a visit to the Aveleda Winery. Here, we’ll savour a glass of the region’s famous green wine and learn more about the winemaking process. Our day will end in Guimarães. (B)

DAY 8 GUIMARÃES

On the agenda today: a walking tour of Guimarães with a local guide. After learning more about the castle, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza and the historic city centre, you’ll have a free afternoon to relax or do some shopping. This evening, we’ll enjoy one last dinner together at a local restaurant – accompanied by a traditional dance performance. (B,D)

DAY 9 GUIMARÃES – PORTO

Our journey will end in Porto. Here, we’ll wander medieval lanes and small squares on foot – and tick off some important landmarks, including the Clérigos Tower, Aliados Avenue, the cathedral and the Ribeira district. This afternoon, there’s still plenty of time to visit the famous port wine cellars and indulge in a tasting before our trip comes to a close. (B)
